Place Terms

In the event of non-runners bookmakers may reduce the number of places they pay out on for each way bets;

  • Handicaps of more than 16 runners – 1/4 odds on first four places.
  • Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds on first three places.
  • All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5 odds on first three places.
  • All races of 5-7 runners – 1/4 odds on first two places.
  • All races of less than 5 runners – place money goes on to win.

  • Bookmakers often pay 5 places 1/5 odds instead of 4 1/4 and 4 places 1/5 odds instead of 3 1/4.

    Bear in mind that they don’t always update the advertised places in the event of non-runners reducing the field from say 12 to 11 but rely on you to have read the small print to find out.
